Vintage Paperback #01532 without the Lion on the front cover; (History: In case you are unaware of the "lion" saga, here it is... When Tolkien released The Hobbit in the US, Ballantine commissioned the same artist who did the Tryptich covers for The Lord of the Rings to do a matching cover for The Hobbit to be released in September of that year. She was told it was more lighthearted, a sort of children's story, and having never actually READ it, she put a lion on the cover about to drink from the pond. Now we all know there is no lion in The Hobbit, and Tolkien was absolutely FURIOUS. But before Ballantine could pull the cover, 5 printings had already gone to press and been released! It was later airbrushed out, but First USA Editions of The Hobbit have the Lion on the cover! NOTE: The back cover includes a note from Tolkien himself. It reads: A STATEMENT FROM THE AUTHOR ABOUT THIS AMERICAN EDITION - "This paperback edition, and no other, has been published with my consent and co-operation. Those who approve of courtesy (at least) to living authors will purchase it, and no other." Around this time, apparently a company overseas (Ace Books) was producing LOTR novels without the author's consent. // In this delightful and enthralling tale, Tolkien first created the imperishable world of fantasy called Middle-Earth and those charming lilliputan creatures-the Hobbits- whose adventures are contiued in The Lord of the Rings.
